Dr Sonali Walpola

Biography

Sonali completed a PhD at the ANU College of Law in 2015 and lectures in Commercial Law and Tax Law at the Research School of Accounting, within the ANU College of Business and Economics (CBE). Sonali was a recipient of the 2018 CBE Teaching Excellence Award. Sonali's research interests lie in contract and commercial law, tax law and policy, and the emergence and development of Australian common law. Sonali's PhD thesis argues that there are general principles that can explain the law's enforcement of promises across seemingly heterogeneous actions (contract, equitable estoppel, specific equitable doctrines). Sonali is a co-editor of Austaxpolicy, the blog of the ANU Tax and Transfer Policy Institute. Previously, Sonali worked as a solicitor in the Commercial Litigation and Taxation sections at Allens.
